What is HIV?
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the immune system and makes it harder for the body to fight off infections and disease. When left untreated, HIV can progress to AIDS, a condition that can be life-threatening. However, the good news is that with the right knowledge and strategies, HIV transmission can be significantly reduced and those living with HIV can lead healthy lives!
How do I stop the spread of HIV?
Condoms: Condoms are a simple and effective barrier tool used during sex to reduce the risk of STIs, including HIV.
STI Screening and Testing: The CDC recommends that everyone receives an HIV screening once in their life. Those at greater risk may receive more occasional testing. Getting tested is a great way to know your status, so PrimeCare makes it convenient by offering in-office and at-home testing options.
Syringe Services Programs: The most effective way to prevent the spread of HIV and Hep-C among injectable drug users is to stop injecting altogether. If this is not possible, sterile injection equipment for each use is crucial to reduce the risk of infections.
What is PrEP?
PrEP is a medication that can be used to prevent HIV in people who don’t always use condoms during sex, have a partner with HIV, or inject drugs. PrEP works by stopping the virus from settling in your body so even if you’re exposed to HIV, it can’t make you sick. It is available in both oral and injectable form. The HIV prevention team is trained to discuss PrEP and other prevention options with anyone who could benefit!
Is there a preventive medication for other STIs?
Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) is a medication taken after sex to reduce the risk of certain STIs like chlamydia and syphilis. It should be taken within 72 hours of condomless sex to help prevent bacterial STIs. The sooner it is taken, the more effective it is. PrimeCare’s HIV Prevention Team would be happy to discuss all STI prevention strategies with you, including DoxyPEP, condom use, and regular testing!
